Mind you, this is only my experience. I haven’t been to every hospital, but I can tell you a bit about my experiences.
+ Take your shoelaces out of your shoes and leave them at home. They will take them if you don’t, and they’re the item most often lost.
+ For girls, they may not let you wear bras with an underwire. Pack accordingly.
+ If you want to take in notebooks, remember they have to be cow style, not ringed.
+ If you get the chance to go outside, go outside. It’s good for you
+ Bring clothes easily layered. I found that the hospital was pretty cold, but be prepared for any temperature any time of the year.
+ If they have visiting hours, invite people to come. It will make it so much better.
+ Try to keep up your personal hygiene if you can.
+ Make friends with positive people.
+ Go to groups if they have them. If they have gym time go to that. Go down for meals. Pretty much go to every activity they have. It will make time pass faster, and it might help you along the way.
+ Bring stuff to do. Books, cards, coloring supplies. However colored pencils and pens are not allowed.
+ Bring quarters, there may be a pay phone.
+ Don’t lie to get out earlier! I know this is so easy to do, but please don’t. Get the help you need.
+ If you really want out, ask to sign a 72, where they’ll have to let you out within three days or take you to court.
+ You should probably take your meds, but don’t forget you have the right to refuse them.
+ Go if you need to go. I know hospitals seem scary, and some people have had bad experiences with them, but your safety is the most important thing.
Feel free to add to this or ask many any questions if you have them.
